I had a very rough time giving birth to my first child and I was left with a terrible case of hemorroids. The nurses in the hospital told me to take warm sitz baths (where you fill the tub only a few inches with warm water) three times a day. Those helped a lot.

Warm water. Tucks pads afterwards.
They have sitz baths where you can fill the bag with warm water, hang it up on a hook, put the bowl part underneath the toilet seat, sit, then the warm water sprays where you have the hemorroids. Definitely speeds recovery!

Definitely cold. Hemmoroids are essentially enlarged blood vessels. You want to reduce them, therefore cold water is your best bed. Try an occasional (only occasional) stool softener (never a laxative) if your hemmoroids are caused by constipation. Preparation H, available at your drug store, will also work wonders.

I would have guessed cold water, but various web sites recommend warm (not hot) water.
