What does the "you have them on the wrong feet" joke mean?

When I was very young and put on my shoes my mother said 'you've got them on the wrong feet'. And I said 'mom these are the only feet I've got'.

when you say to someone "nice shoes, but you have them on the wrong feet" it means they are so nice they should be on YOUR feet

i think it means that they are off guard and your joke or pun really REALLY sucks
