On May 1st, 2003, Bush declared from the deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln (under a giant banner declaring 'mission accomplished') that major combat operations in Iraq were over, and that America had prevailed in Iraq.

If America has prevailed and major combat operation were over in May 2003, why are 21,500 new American troops being sent to Iraq in February 2007...?

because he is stupid.
he did not even aware that the real war had just begun at the time.

this kind of stupid thing will happen if you elect a guy with the brain of a 10yrs old boy to do the president job.

Well simply, to reinforce the people that are all ready there. Give um a smoke break, let em get a breather, fresh faces new ideas etc. etc.
Although the "major combat operations" were deemed finished (in order to signify the end of a massively successful first strike), building a country from scratch is not easy or quick. 21k folks is a very small number (ever been in a crowd of 250k) and we really need to send 1million. The security encapsulation of Iraq is not static and when bringing Peace to a nation (that has forces outside and in that wish it to fail) you must walk softly and carry a big stick. 21k troops is a very small stick. And lets face it, this is more of a police action than anything else. But someone has to step up and help the Iraq people. It just so happens that we the few the proud the Americans, have committed to helping these Great People of Iraq. And we must ALWAYS follow through on our commitments.
Take a Breath, Scan the Horizon, and Stand Proud, Proud to live in a Nation that is willing to Fight so that others may feel the Winds Of Peace And Freedom that blow in perpetuity across our amber waves of grain.

No, he wasn't in Vietnam, but he DID serve in the Texas National Guard as a pilot. Unless I miss my guess, that DOES count as military service, Debra H. He was dressed in pilot gear because he came in in the second seat on a fighter jet...wearing that gear for flight is S.O.P. Plus, I don't think the president of the United States worries too much about photo ops, as every time he steps out of the house the cameras click.

The mission that was accomplished back in 2003 was the liberation of the Iraqi people from a murderous dictator named Saddam Hussein. The mission that continues is the fight against terrorists and others who do not want a free, democratic Iraq.

originally it was about Saddam and his regime. Taking over the country from the dictatorship. However, with loss of the dictatorship, came a powerstruggle. Shite/Sunni etc...
The all want to be in charge and have it their way. There is no way we could have predicted this much of a struggle. So sure the major combat ops are over, but now we have to fix what we didn't plan for.

Mission accomplished was supposed to have been the lynch pin in his reelection campaign of 2004.
He went into a country based on a lie, had no plan to get out and is twisting in the wind because Iraqis are not rejoicing in the accomplishments of the Great Democratizer.
Iraq has spiraled into chaos and he keeps throwing bodies into the fire hoping they can pull his fat out of it. People are correct in that if Iraq does not stabilize, the chaos will spread to the entire region, however this threat would not have happened in the first place if Bush had not attacked a country that did not attack us. That action lowered him to the level of the very terrorists he claims to be fighting. Terrorists operate under the premise of attacking others before they can be attacked by them.

Oops! Do you think George mis-spoke? That's one of those things in life that you wish you could take back.

What GWB and the rest of the country didn't realize at the time, was the Islamic jihad was just getting ready to fight. This was a serious miscalculation and we're paying the price, today.

This is no reason to capitulate, and it's no reason to roll over and let them kill even more of our people. But, it is time we made short work of it and went after the son of a bi tch that is the cause of our woes. Who you ask? The diminutive, banjo eyed Ahmadinejad of Iran, that is who! Wipe out his sorry butt along with their nuclear complex and the whole thing will quiet down. It's as simple as that !

good question

I think only Mr. Bush actually knows the answer to that

Personally, I fail to see how an increase in troops will aid the situation.

The insurgency is occurring between different muslim factions, and american soldiers are just caught in the middle

Are they going to stop them?

No

Is democracy going to work?

Probably Not

predictably the number 21,000 has turned out to be yet another bush lie.

21,000 more combat troops actually means that the number will be more like 48,000.

sooner or later, america will learn that this man simply can't be trusted...
