After nearly 50 years of c**p and 'life experiences' of the type which have caused practically everybody my age I know to now be on antidepressants, why am I the only one not on pills? And while we're on the subject, how have I managed to get through the menopause without HRT?

To rozek and devil weed, I have certainly not had an easy life, it would take me too long to tell you about it!

To bleaux, dali, jenny and munu, the reason I pose this question is certainly not to complain about it, it's because friends and family who are depressed often ask me for advice in dealing with it. I try to help but I'm not a psychiatrist, just a housewife. I spend a lot of time sometimes trying to work out why they have become depressed and I haven't even though the same and worse things have happened to me.

your dealing with it, and you've got the coping skills, so you (and I ) are the lucky ones. It is not what we suffer in life, it is how we deal with it.
as a nurse I often have to look after people that really I could shake some sense into. People that expect handouts when they could work, or taxi fares home, when no one else gets them , so why should they? But they cannot cope; they have no coping skills. You have to develop them, they are a valuable asset. No one ever said life was going to be easy, did they?!

Well lucky you maybe you have had bad things happen to you that others think are not that bad. Life isn't great for everyone and some find it harder to cope I have never lost a grown up child and I think that could push me to go on pills. I know of people who have and they cope, how I don't know. I had a bad time on the menopause and had to and still am taking HRT, so lucky you on that as well. What may seem a big problem to some may be an everyday occurrence for others. We are all different thank God.

You are not alone, though, reading through the questions on here, you could be forgiven for thinking that you are.
I've had more "life experience" than most would consider beneficial, yet don't feel the need for counselling, pills or sympathy, and I feel that you are similar.
You are resourceful, strong and not alone.
Go for it, as you obviously do, and enjoy it, as you probably do. It's the only life that is given to us.

it could be because you weren't abused, are molested by your father or other family members, are maybe its because you didn't grow up in a dysfunctional family where you felt shame every day of your life, are maybe you avoided high stress jobs where it was so important to watch out for your people other wise they could die,are maybe you never seen another person scalp peeled off there head, and had to hold it in place while the paramedics came, some people i guess are just weaker than others.

You learned how to go with the flow and take things in stride as they came to you. You figured out how to get through them and beyond them without leaving lasting marks on your psyche. that includes the menopause.

Be very happy that you are as you are - a strong woman - nothing to be ashamed of, and be greatful that you're medication free!

(Doing the menopause thing without meds as well - whoo hoo! - oh, and life without the meds too!)

Well I've no idea, I guess you should consider yourself quite lucky ma'am! You should be really happy because depression is an awful thing to experience. You must have had a good life ; ) Hopefully you'll never fall under depression.

Simple, you're physically and mentally healthier than most. Depression is as much physical as it is mental. It has to do with imbalance of the neurotransmitters. As long as you eat healthy, exercise moderately, and engage in some leisure activities, your body should produce and regulate the proper levels of neurotransmitters and you'll probably never become depressed.

How do I know this? Found out the hard way.
