Depends upon the year but most of the explorers were set up in such a way that it was easier to remove the front driveshaft and differential as the 4x2 and 4x4 suspensions were pretty much the same (with a spindle in place of a axle hub on the 1995-2001 models... pretty much 02- current have everything the same as a 4x4 on a 4x2 with the exception of the front drivetrain).

You are looking at a new transmission and driveshaft also.... It can be done but are you willing to go thru the headaches and money to swap out? cheaper just to keep it the same or get rid of the explorer.

I assume you are talking about removing the geared front axle when you say made into a 2wheel drive.. It can be done but at a lot of expense. you would have to change part of or maybe even the whole transmission, drop the transfer case, re-size the drive shaft to the proper length, then comes the hard part, drop the entire front axle and suspension and replace it with components from a pickup, along with new steering setup...

Why not just order 2wheel drive to start with?? Better yet get a Chevy Blazer comes either way!!

if you mean 2 wheel drive only, yes it can change the transfer case, and replace the transmission with a regular transmission, and you no longer have a 4 wheel drive vehicle,i have seen a few don't this way ,people get tired of fooling with the 4 wheel drive in them, and change them over, you can always go back later on to a 4 wheel drive but yes it can and has been done several times before, good luck,i hope this help,s.

sure put it in 4 wheel drive mode.

in 2wd only 1 wheel drives, so in 4wd 1 front and 1 rear wheel will drive so there you go 2 wheel drive

For the cost and time, you would be better off to sell this one and buy on that is a 4x2. The 4x4 has a higher book value, so you may end up with a mound of cash on top of it.
