It's basically advertising bud. Take it from a prior service army guy who went national guard and has met up with every branch along the way. I even have a fellow guardsmen who works right next to me that was prior-service marine. He says the same thing. The marines advertise themselves and have the reputation for being the toughest, but the army has the same exact basic and combat training (minus the few weeks marine history classes) and all branches have their elite units( seals, rangers, delta, pathfinders, recon).
All military service is tough... the biggest and baddest is what you make of it...how far your willing to go in the branch that you've chosen. Don't pick a branch because John Wayne, or Hollywood or advertising campaigns say it's "the best of the best". Join based on the merits of that branch and how it will fit with what you want out of your life and your career.

I have always heard that the Ghurkas were the toughest. But they were a tiny elite group that carried only a knife called a Khukuri. I am not sure they even exist any longer.
But Marines considering their armament and training to use their weapons must be right up there.
Some smaller groups such as the Navy Seals and US Army Delta Force are really tough organizations, but the Marines have small elite units also. I guess the real answer that in the size group, the USMC has to be the top.
When I was in Boot Camp at Parris Island, SC, one of our Drill Instructers asked the rhetorical question about who among us had joined the Corps to die for his country. Well, practically all of us 18 year old kids raised our hands. He grinned and said, "Not me. I joined the Corps to make some other Son of a B**** die for his!" You know, that made sense.

The Marines are good! Damned good! They train hard, they work hard, and they know their job when they deploy! The biggest thing the Corps teaches these guys is teamwork. They really don't want any John Wayne's in the Corps because he wasn't a team player.
When Marines have team spirit, they are at their best, because the team is what is most important, and it's only as strong as it's weakest link. Nobody want's to be the weakest link, so they work like hell to make sure they aren't the one dragging down the unit. When this happens, you have a team that nobody can beat. This is what seperates the Marines from other services. Semper Fidelis!

Army Airborne, Delta, Green Berets, Rangers, Seals, Air Commandos, all are tougher then the Marines, and all are Airborne qualified. But the Marines do have Marine Recon, which are jumpers, so they are tough. These are the guys who do the dirty work and don't want a camera man and P.R. guy around. They let Marines get there picture took.

well i hate to bust c321 arty BUT all of the above he listed army airborne, rangers ect. all except for the SEALS are nowhere near as tough as the marines, army ranger school is equivalent to Marine corps basic training and after basic training Marines go through another 2 months of combat training where they are trained about combat, no other branch considers themselves to be RIFLEMEN first and their MOS (military occupation specialty) to come second. also the marines can be mobilized at anytime to anywhere they are the 911 force of the US they are in the fight before the rangers or any other branch of service. Also upon entering boot camp the marines are the only service that consider their prospects "recruits" you aren't a marine until you graduate all other branches call you a solider, airman, sailor ect. upon entering boot camp

all the branches are trained in different things. the marines do have the toughest courses to get through and not many are taken and even less make it as a marine. less then 15% of all americans ever have been a marine and less then 2% of american women have ever been a marine. there basic training is grueling and exhausting. however all branches do different things. marines however are trained in more things then airmen, sailers, or the army.

I dont buy it. People shouldnt compare branches of the service against each other like that. They are all AMERICAS MILITARY. The marines cant function without the air force, the air force cant function without the army, the army cant function without the navy. Together they are a team.
