most tattoo artists aren't piercers. they are totally separate jobs. but i don't know of a school or class that you can take to become a piercer. most piercers that i know have worked at a shop that does piercing and stuff and they have done an apprenticeship of a few months to learn how to do it all. however, i don't think i would get pierced where i get my hair cut... those are also two different fields. that scenerio brings to mind the movie 'stigmata' where they cut hair and did tattoos which is not very likely to happen either.

Whoever's telling you that you should do both is retarded, and a piercer apprenticship is still 1 year. There aren't usually courses availible, not reputable ones at least. Go to a piercer you like and trust and talk to them, they can either take you on as an apprentice or at least point you in the right direction. Asking the generally clueless public won't do you much good, because lots of people still beleive getting your ears pierced at the mall by some chick with a "gun" and 30min training is a better idea than going to someone who knows what they're doing.
Go talk to the piercers around you. Travel if needed, because it's better to do this right than waste your time.
Oh, and doing a hair salon that does piercings will be more of an expense than it's worth in putting in an entirely seperate room for piercing, maybe even another room just for sterilization. I don't know what Canadian regulations are, but I do know that no one in the body-mod world will see you as reputable running a piercing parlor inside of a hair salon.

I did piercing for a while, it was fine, it was part of my job as a beauty therapist. I have a few tattoos, when I had my first one done I was very naive and had a Chinese symbol tattooed on me, although I have no regrets it really doesn't have any special meaning for me and I plan to have it Incorporated into another tattoo at some point. i also have one on my ankle which went badly wrong, it looks like a deformed snowman with a tail (except it is black) it's pretty small so I am also having that one covered over as well at the end of February, it has taken me 6 years to find an image that I like and its based on some artwork, I am not 100% sure if it would work as a tattoo, perhaps if I email the link to you you could tell me what you think, if it would work as a tatoo. the site I have found does have some tattoos on it based on the artwork so I am hoping it will work!! You don't allow email contact which is a shame because I don't want to post the link here as it always gets thumbs down :(

You can't just 'take a course' and call yourself a professional piercer. I did a 1.5 year apprenticeship before going out on my own. Best way to learn is for someone to teach you one on one.
And yes you can be a piercer without being a tattoo artist, that's what I do. But I personally don't think its very clean to work in a hair salon and do piercings. You'd have to isolate the two areas from eachother and be damn strict about cleaning.

Body piercing is a great career but costly - you cannot use all disposables so you will have to be set up with a "dirty" area for processing used forceps, receiving tubes, etc. and a clean area for an autoclave and storage areas....
Plus it is a huge investment for jewelry, alone! You have to use the good stuff. It takes a long time to learn all there is to know about piercing properly and safely; and blow driers with hair, and possibly nail dust floating around is not conducive to a proper environment.

You dont have to do both if thats not what you want, I know alot of people who are strictly piercers. You can do an apprenticeship at a shop , but some shops require that you take a piercing class or basic anatomy, and sterile technique which you can take at any jr. college. You'd have to ask around your area and see what the rules are for your neck of the woods.

If you ask me, a hair salon doesn't sound like the best place to be doing body piercings.

the obvious has already been stated, however a good body piercer also has taken a lengthy apprenticeship with a local shop.
go to your local shops and see what they think about training you, theres more to it than just poking holes in people, you need a good knowledge of anatomy, bleeding, and bloodborne pathogen training.
