Habitat for Humanity - I got involved in this when I was in college and it was a great organization. I helped establish a campus chapter and we spent a Spring Break building houses in Mississippi. It was a great experience.
Civil War Preservation Trust - I'm a big history buff and like to see battlefields preserved.
Envision Linesville - This is a small local non-profit that I started a few years ago to undertake community improvement projects. It's been a lot of work, but it's a labor of love.

No kill animal shelters are the best. If you are asking which to donation money to, make sure that you research the percentage of the money that actually goes to the "cause" and the percentage that is administrative costs. Too many charities, by State statute, do not have to account for how they spend donations. My attitude is anything under 80% to the "cause" is not a charity that gets my financial support.

The American Cancer Society....they have funded 41 Nobel Prize winners, grown cancer research by leaps and bounds, improved the quality of life for cancer patients and survivors and helped develop life-saving medicines.
Plus...who do you know who hasn't been touched by cancer in some way? I'll be donating to them my entire life.

-----Boys' Town. I think it is now called Girls' and Boys' Town. Here in Houston, Texas USA I also like the Mayor's charity to help the homeless and end giving money to people on the street. ---Jim
