We would only need it for one night and more or less just to sleep in, so it doesn't have to be a five star.

My parents stayed here twice when they visited me during the summer I spent in DC... http://www.hiltongardeninn.com/en/gi/hotels/index.jhtml?ctyhocn=DCAARGI

It's a really safe nice area in Arlington with restaurants and small shops just a short way up the street and you can catch the metro right there too... seriously it's a 5 minute walk to the metro station... you can't get any closer.

I really do recommend it.

There are two Marriott hotels at the Crystal City Metro. As well as a Hilton, Holiday Inn and others in the area. They are all located within Arlington, VA and just across the river from DC.

There are a bunch of hotels in the Crystal City area (Arlington). Metro stop would be Pentagon City. The area is near downtown DC as well.

I stayed in the Crystal City area. The hotels have direct access to the Metro through a system of tunnels underground. It's really amazing. That way there's no need to worry about the weather and the parking is taken care of in their garage.

A good bargain is the Econolodge Metro in Arlington. It is a short walk from the East Falls Church station on the orange line. (A bike path/hiking trail directly links the station with the motel.) For your purposes, it's probably a better deal than the more expensive places closer in.

The Courtyard Marriott Embassy Row is inexpensive and offers free breakfast.

Also, try hotwire.com if you don't care about the exact hotel and location. They have really cheap rates.
