First off, to the person that said it is illegal to conduct a search without a warrant is WRONG!!!!! There are things such as consent, probation/parole, incident to arrest, etc. There are a number of ways a search can legally be conducted without a warrant. Yes the 4th ammendment protects us all against unlawful searches, but it doesn't say a warrant is required for every search.
If you ask me why you are being arrested, I have to tell you. I don't have to give you the details of my case, but I have to tell you the charges against you... More than likely you already know though why you are being arrested.

Was the person who asked about the arrest just some bystander? If that's the case...yeah, it's none of his business.
If the person who asked was the person that was arrested....all he has to do is look at a copy of his complaint that he gets from the officer after he's processed.

They HAVE to tell you why you're being arrested. Habeas Corpus. And it's a violation of your Fourth Amendment rights if they search without a warrant.

They have to tell you what you are being charged with/suspected of. It is the law of the land. If they didn't inform you, I would let my lawyer know that information.

They usually ask you, do you know why you are being detained. If they didn't, then tell your lawyer. However it'll probably be their word against yours. I'm sure you know how that will probably turn out.
