Turn each sentence into an equation. Use variables to represent Mavie (m) and her brother (b)
Mavie is 5 years older than her brother:
m=5+b
Five years ago she was 2 times older than her brother (remember to subtract 5 years from her brother's age as well as from hers):
m-5=2(b-5)
Now solve for b by substituting "5+b" from the 1st equation for "m" in the 2nd (since they are equal):
5+b-5=2(b-5)
Solve the equation:
b=2b-10
10+b=2b
10=b
You now have Mavie's brother's age (b). Sub that into the first equation to get Mavie's age:
m=5+10
m=15
