Do you know what type of brackets your ortho is using? The reason is that most brackets are held in place to the arch wire with small colored "O" rings. These are what give your braces the color.
However, maybe your ortho is now using Damon brackets. These brackets have a sliding door that locks in your archwire.

Sweetie, the braces themselves are silver or the clear plastic ones. It's the "elastics" (little elastic circles or "o" rings) that hold the arch wire in place, these are the colors you get to choose each visit. It sounds like they just misunderstood you this time. Next time tell them you want some color in your smile and don't hold out on you, show you the big box!

As for eating, it's tough for the first few days, but don't worry you'll be eating normal again very soon. I tell all our Ortho patients that for the first few days stick to cold things; ice cream, popsicles, smoothies (most of my patients love this diet and don’t want to stop!) foods like these have a numbing effect from the cold and are really soothing to sore teeth. Then in a few days slowly add in softer foods like soups, baked cheese stuffed potato, scrambled eggs, mac and cheese, pastas (over cooked) anything that requires very little chewing for now. Then after you get used to the braces and a little more comfortable with your teeth settling in, start adding slightly harder foods back in to your diet. Just don't over do it and eat a tough piece of meat and get your teeth throbbing again. Take it slow and easy for now, and be sure to cut everything up into bite size pieces when you do start solid foods. Take Motrin or Advil for the pain for now, along with the cold drinks and foods. You may need to revert back to these cold foods and the Motrin for a few days after your adjustments each visit. Sounds like you're doing fine though. Keep up with your brushing and flossing spending a little extra time on this so your tissue doesn't get inflamed and start hurting too. Just keep in mind what a fantabulous smile you're going to have when it's all over with! Good luck and I hope I was of some help!

Try to chew as much as you can the more you chew the easier it gets. You are sore because your teeth are loose from the braces they will tighten up quicker if you use them. But be prepared every time you have them adjusted you will be sore for a couple of days

Wow, I didn't know they could do that!

Maybe it's cost effective if they only go with the silver!
