If you were a genius, what would you do to end America's addiction to oil?

Stop spending all our tax dollars on Iraq and start developing a oil substitute. Almost all of our chemical plants are being shut down and outsourced to India and China, and all our chemists are being forced out of work. We could never fight a war without chemicals, and now we can't defend ourselves without support from two countries who would never support us in time of conflict. It is the most stupid thing our country is doing right now, and I hope all you Y!A people get angry about it. We need to stop spending 400 billion rebuilding Iraq and start using the money to develop an alternative to our oil addiction, it would also do more to eliminate terrorism as well! Thank you!

I'd jack up the price of oil to $10. a gallon, and have industry invent ways to recycle everything imaginable. People would be charged for their garbage pick-up BY THE POUND, and any car that got less than 50 miles a gallon would be taken off the road & recycled. How's THAT for starters? Unfortunately- I'm not a genius, & neither are most of the rest of us. And that's why Americans are "addicted" to oil. We don't "know" & we don't "care"... :(

This solution has already been discovered.
However, it's the Government that takes care not to implement anything to drastic. No use/need for oil would end the war, economy might drop, gasoline would not exist killing petrol stations and the like.
Vehicles running on water or battery have been around for years, but not available for these reasons.

Instead of pissing away billions of dollars invading and occupying a country that had NO WMDs, NO clear ties to Osama, NO part in the 9/11 attacks, and which posed NO immediate threat to the US, we should have used that money to build more wind turbine farms, solar power plants, geothermal generators (where available), and facilities to produce renewable bio-fuels (ethanol, bio-diesel, etc). Furthermore, we should be working on developing hydrogen fuel cell technology (ya know, like Dubya promised to do during his first term...and then didn't?), and ways to make nuclear power less risky. Lastly, the auto industry needs to be held to higher standards with regards to fuel efficiency, hybrid development, etc.

Wind farms
Solar chimneys
Integrate redirected daylighting into building design
Tax credits for installing heat pumps
Solar stills for ethanol production (drive down cost & petroleum inputs required)
White LEDs to replace incandescent/flourescent lights
Solar ovens & solar oven inserts for existing homes
Add insulation to all homes
Schools equipped with human-powered gymnasium generators (like a stationary bike that generates electricity; could also use falling weights (after they had been lifted) to generate electricity.

innovations like produce fuel or a clean way to produce hydrogen fuel. and even spend time on
new inner city commuting like electric trams it may be a lot of money for a wile but it would pay off and would be fast we need a President like JFK to motivate us not just say it once and forget about it
