Sorry to say...but a girlfriend is definitely not the solution to loneliness. Your first answer is to be ok being alone before you find someone else to be a part of your life with you.
I've found that when I place an expectation on another human being to fill a void that I have, it never works out to my advantage. Humans will always let you down in one way or another--and even if she looks "picture perfect" at first, you will find something that irritates you sooner or later.
Sooooo...all that to say, I believe your first issue is being comfortable with being alone.
Once that happens, I am of the strong belief that things will naturally fall into place, and women will begin to become attracted to your confidence. A woman always loves a man with confidence. :)
Not to mention, it's very attractive to find someone who is just as ok being alone as having someone in their life. :)

You can't MAKE anybody like you. Just be yourself. Treat ladies with respect and dignity and they will like you. No one wants to be lied to or put 2nd over their guy friends. Us gals want a real man who isn't afraid to show us off to all their friends. (Not like a new pair of shoes), but some guys act differently when their friends are around because their "male ego" might get crushed if the other guys think he's whipped by a lady. That's why YOU have the lady and they are hanging among themselves. lol

You pick you typr of girl how you want her to be and when you find that girl or someone similar because you wont find exactly what your looking for you act really nice to them .Make that girl feel special like she perfect no matter what and kind of flatering her while yo let her know you like her

find an interesting hobby. play a cool instrument like the guitar or drums
don't be centered on yourself. ask about them and what they do.
just talk to them and find a common ground with likes and dislikes.

well thats the thing. you cant relaly make a concious descision. i mean sure sometimes dating websites work and stuff but generally you cant go looking for a girlfriend you sort ajust have to run into one and be like "o..how did this happen..holy crap this is great!"
