How to verify windows xp product key hasnt been used without installing?

I traded for what I was told to be an unused windows xp home edition software cd package and product. Everything seems to be there. But before I wipe out my working but questionable xp professional software with service pack two... I need to find out of I have a good key for this windows xp home edition before I dump my present core system. any ideas?

Doesn't matter
If there seems to be any problem, Call the number they provide in that instance and tell them you are RE-Installing.
OR
Contact the number on your CD Package if you don't want to chance it.
