The process is called: "Iron-Catalyzed Plankton Restoration". marine phytoplankton have annually absorbed and fixed nearly half of all planetary CO2 emissions or approximately 50 billion tons/year. Seeding plankton poor regions in the South Atlantic Is the least expensive and most envorimentaly benefical strategy. The effects are dramatic one pound of iron dispersed over an expanse of sea water will fix 100,000 pounds of Carbon... This is not a typo! Recent marine trials confirm that one kilogram of fine iron particles can reliably generate well over 100,000 kilograms of plankton biomass this biomass in turn serves as the base of a food chain that provides for marine life in the seas. The size of the iron particles is critical, however, and particles of several micrometres or less seem to be ideal both in terms of sink rate and bioavailability. Particles this small are not only easier for cyanobacteria and other phytoplankton to incorporate, the churning of surface waters keeps them in the euphotic or sunlit biologically active depths without sinking for long periods of time. There have already been small scale demonstrations of this method and the results comform to the predicted levels of carbon sequesteration anticipated. This method DWARFS all other proposed carbon fixation methods and is truly a win/win for all concerned. Current estimates of the amount of iron required to sequester 3 gigatons ( 1 giggaton = 1 billion tons) of CO2 range widely, from approximately two hundred thousand tons/year to over 4 million tons/year. Even in the latter worst case scenario, this only represents about 16 supertanker loads of iron and a projected cost of less than €20 billion. Considering EU penalties for Kyoto non-compliance will reach €100/ton CO2e in 2010 and the annual value of the global carbon credit market is projected to exceed €1 trillion by 2012, even the most conservative estimate still portrays a very feasible and inexpensive strategy to offset half of all industrial emissions.

That could help a little bit. But the problem is way larger than all the trees we could ever plant. Here's the proof, hard scientific data.

The little squiggles are plants removing CO2. They go down in the summer as plants remove CO2 and up in the winter. The huge upward trend is us, burning fossil fuels. You could increase the trees by 4 times (actually you can't, not enough tree growing land) and the problem wouldn't be solved.

There is no easy solution. The only way to solve this problem is to attack the real problems, not ignore them. We need to:

Conserve energy

Replace fossil fuels with other things; nuclear, solar, wind, bio fuels.

Do research into means of capturing ("sequestering") CO2.

They breathe in oxygen and produce energy in the form of ATP just the same way as we do. Only difference is that 'bugs' do not have lungs, they are small enough and have a large enough surface area to volume ratio that they can get all the oxygen they need by diffusion. Some bugs have adaptations such as spiracles that allow them to 'absorb' more oxygen more efficiently. Furthermore, plants too utilize oxygen in exactly the same way as animals and bugs!

Plants do not convert carbon dioxide into oxygen. Plants take the oxygen out of water, H2O, and transpirate, or "exhale" in animal terms, the oxygen from the water into a gas in our atmosphere. Plants do indeed take in and use carbon dioxide in photosynthesis, and more trees does mean less CO2 in the atmosphere. Planting more trees will not solve the global warming problem. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions will.

Planting trees would certainly help BUT the problem is that the sink (processes that take up CO2) are becoming smaller and smaller compared to the sources (processes that generate the gas). It is as simple as that. To plant enough trees to make a significant dent in the process would require humanity to deconstruct much of the urban environment. The ocean is also a sink but it has absorbed so much CO2 that it is becoming acidic and is now causing severe stress upon coral reefs in low latitude environments. As a scientist and being as impartial as we are supposed to be I will tell you that I am truly afraid of the consequences of our actions and how it will impact our children and later generations.

I would like to see us off the oil habit simply because it grates on me to put money into the purses of regimes that hate us.
I agree with you - - - plant trees. It's something everyone can do.

In my opinion global warming is not real. I believe its a stunt that (our gov't) is trying to get our dependency off foreign oil. BUT, if it is real then why are they solely blaming our cars and electricity consumption? We create CO2 through breathing and every time volcanic activity occurs CO2 is put out. So instead of cutting back on oil we should just plant trees. It's so easy to fix this but it seems our government is so oblivious to easy ways out.

you have just about got it ,if we could convince the whole world to follow the concept of a garden culture ,with food growing in the suburbs and in peoples back gardens and fruit trees in the streets ,we could probably lick Global warming,and cleaner behaviour by industry and technowledgy would help

not all of it is natural ,many factors are a result of human intervention
here are some details to annoy you further,and the governments are not doing enough that is the problem
and the dead people are past worrying about it

in North Africa,India,Mexico ,millions of people are effected by land loss and desertification


in recent times thousands of people have died because of exessive heat,usually old people.in India ,Mexico and France,
deforestation causing desertification,the desert conditions causing very cold nights and scorching hot days

in china, thousands of what used to be farmers are running for their lives from the dust storms that have burried their towns and turned their lands into dessert,the globe where they were got to hot for them .
and instead of producing food they are now needing it from some where else,and they will drastically effect the world food prices when they start buying water in the form of grains ,at any cost destabalising governments, in some countries ,could be the result
(are you seeing more Chinese around interested in agricultural lands ,we do here in Mexico)

,the Sahara is growing by 7 kilometers a year
and all of the desserts we know are a results of mans actions ,and they are increasing ,not getting less ,in the dinosaurs days ,there were no desserts.

collectively this planet is drying up because of bad farming practices like,over grazing and fertilizers,

as far as the food production is concerned, Global warming or some of its effects are serious,rising seas result in landloss

each degree rise in temperature means 10%crop loss

more landloss because of desertification every year,we have less areble land to produce food ,for an extra 70 million people ,

and there is less and less water (because of deforestation),to irrigate this production ,
and there are less and less farmers to do it..
who are overpumping deep carbon aquifiers
who are plowing more and more unstable lands because they have lost so many million hectares to desertification ,
because of bad farming practises ,such as using fertilizers and heavy machinary or over grazing

RISING SEAS
The northpole is melting ,and we will know it without ice in our life times.
this does not affect the sea level because it is ice that is already in the water.but the melting ice from Green land and the south pole ,are another matter.

Global warming is in theory reversable,but it will mean global co operation between all countries ,and taking into account human nature and the world politics ,it is unlikely that this will happen,

At least not untill we are all in the middle of planetary disastres and it becomes a battle for the survival of humanity every where.

SOLUTIONS
if you want to help the planet ,plant a tree every week ,if everyone on the planet did we we would be able to reverse the destructive processes

reduce carbon emisions,and they are already working on that by alternative forms of energy and regulations on carbon producing materials,aerosol cans,burning rubbish,industrial chimneys,powerplants etc.

the capture of carbon and the production of water and assist the aquiferous manta.

the world bank pays large subsidies for reforrestation to capture carbon and the best tree for this is the Pawlonia

Waterharvesting projects ,such as millions of small dams.to redirect over ground waterflows from the rains into the ground to supply subteranian water supplies.

the protection of existing forrests.

stop building more highways,urban planning to include vegetation stop building cities encourage people to return to the land to conduct their business from there which now has become possible thanks to the internet.

education to motivate people to auto sufficiency by building more home food gardens.

education on environmental awareness
education on family planning to curb over´populaion

Agricultural education and improvements to follow the principals or sustainability and soil management.

more environmental or land ,design to prevent bush fires,such as--fire breaks

,more dams.regulations and control for public behaviour

alternative effeciant public transport to discourage the use of the internal conbustion engine

recicling wastes,limit water use
