Yeah. I think some people do. The reasons may vary.

3 examples:

For instance, a battered woman may start dressing shabbily, stop taking care of herself & even take to drugs or something because she feels shamed & disgraced by her chice of such a loser.

A guy might dress lousy, too, to include bad hygene to make people feel sorry for him.

Or either sex might get disgusting tatoos (like something really distasteful) & act mean to make people afraid of him when he's never had love in his/her life.
