This is a very good match up and definite dream bout. Both guys had great early career records Robinson was 128 -1-2 at one point Duran was 71-1. At any weight these two fought at Duran has the power edge, the reach advantage goes with Robinson and that is what would win him this fight. The abilities of these two are similar but Robinson by decision

Roberto Duran was an amazing fighter and a true ring legend particularly at lightweight where he was practically unbeatable. He later also won titles at the heavier weight classes and gave middleweight champion Marvin Hagler a tough battle before losing to him by decision. Duran was very clever and tough and could box and punch even at heavier weight classes. Sugar Ray Robinson is probbly the greatest boxer who ever lived and could do it all. Both fighters fought the very toughest competition in their storied careers. I believe that Duran would give Robinson a great fight much the way Fullmer, Basillio, and LaMotta did during their careers and land some hard punches against Sugar Ray. Robinson would use his great footwork and amzing boxing ability to win a close decision.

Duran would probably take a beating win or lose. Robinson would be pressured very hard by Duran.

Anything is possible with these two great fighters in their primes. Robinson, however, seemed to be better technically, and I would say this along with his amazing toughness gives him the edge. What a great fight it would have been though. I've heard Robinson referred to as the greatest fist fighter to ever live, and the general consensus among experts seems to lean heavily that way. Based on this, it's hard to not give him the edge in any reasonable fight.

We are lucky to have the history we do with these fighters and others such as Hagler, Leonard, Hearns along with many others.

Hey, what's up? You know what, this would have been a helluva fight. This fight, however, wouldn't be possible. Not only because of their difference in era, but also becuse of their difference in their primes. You see, Roberto Duran primed in the 140lb. division, whilst Sugar Ray primed in the middleweight (160lbs.)
If you insist on seeing them clash in their primes, however, we can simply have a catchweight at 150lbs. The problem is, though, that they are not in their prime weight classes. Duran will have less pop ten pounds north, and Robinson won't be as oriented as he was ten pounds south.
The decision then, of the superbout would be Robinson in a close competitive match. I don't really know, though. It can truly go either way. A draw, anyone?

Duran was an unrelenting pressure fighter, the kind of fighter who never took a backward step - a smaller Jake LaMotta, if you like. But Robinson was just brilliant at everything - boxing in combos, throwing single hard shots, and boxing defensively. He was the ultimate dancemaster, and any boxing fan's dream.

I'm currently doing a project on Robinson, and one of the quotes that stuck in my mind was one Bert Sugar made, when he said he once saw Sugar Ray knock someone out while going backwards! Sugar Ray was also a master tactician, and I feel it would have only taken him one or two rounds to figure out Duran.

Both had solid chins, with Duran probably the more powerful with his streetfighter style of boxing, but Sugar Ray with the far superior technique and footwork (someone once said, that Sugar Ray wasn't especially strong, but used his leverage and footwork to knock people out). Although I feel that Robinson would have frustrated Duran, I don't feel that he would have intentionally made Duran lok stupid, like Leonard did.

In a fifteen round contest, I see Duran pressing forward in the earlier rounds, with Robinson using his speed to keep Duran at bay, and counter punch. Duran uses hard shots, and also his elbows and head close in, to try and unsettle Robinson. Robinson is unfazed by this. Later in the fight, Robinson's speed starts to tell, and uses it to try and bewilder Duran, landing lightning quick combos.

Both are still standing at the end of a 15 round war, and Robinson is the winner on my card, winning 9 rounds to 5, with one round a draw.

I dont think they would have matched up in their true primes, as I remember Roberto was very light when he was at his best and when Sugar competed in the olympics he was in the 130s then campaigned as a junior welter and welter at his best...if matched up though I believe Sugar wouldnt have tried to bang with Duran like he did in the first fight, an excellent tactician I believe the second fight(aside from Duran quitting) was a good representation of what would happen, with Leonard boxing boxing and showing superior speed when inside Roberto's hanging jab...

Doingitright your talking about Sugar Ray Lenoard and the question is about Sugar Ray Robinson i think you mis-read it. I think Sugar Ray Robinson would've took this fight. Ray Lenoard studied alot of Robinsons tapes. If Robinson tried to bang it out with Duran like Lenoard did in their first fight Robinson would've took it. And he couldve boxed him.
