and I was wondering if there are any realistic "training" flight simulators that are open to the public in the US. It doesn't matter where if there is one.

I am a professional pilot and would recommend any computer sim that gives you the basics, ie. Microsoft Flight Sim and purchase a yoke (not stick) and the rudder pedals for the computer. To understand what is going on better, I would go to a nearby airport and purchase the Jeppessen Private Pilot Manual and read the whole book. Now you will have a good grasp on theory and a chance to see how it works on the flight simulator. Finally, after a month or two, and money saved, go to the airport and find a flight instructor who will take you up for 1 hour and add to what you already know. From there.. the only way to continue is to keep taking lessons if you like it. Good Luck and be safe!

Two PC sims that are worthwhile:
Microsoft Flight simulator
Falcon

However, the single best thing you can do/purchase is an introductory lesson at your local flight school.
This will allow to you to see if this is really what you want to do.
