I am not a kidney specialist or anything close to that, but my mom did have kidney stones. from what i heard kidney stones result in an excess of calcium. The body, not knowing what to do with so much calcium, does what it does with all other extra stuff( salts, water, etc.) it sends it out of your body. when the calcium gets to the kidney, it for some reasons stays there and clumps up. over time, with the arrival of more and more calcium, the clumps grow larger thus making kidney "stones"

Well, there are many different kinds of kidney stones, but they are all mainly caused by excessive saturation of the kidneys by the material involved. Excessive saturation is most commonly due to low urine volume and reduced urine excretion, which allows the minerals to accumulate and crystallize. Calcium stones are most common (65% of stones), magnesium ammonium phosphate stones are second (15%), next are uric acid stones (5-10%), and last are cystine stones (1-2%).
