As far as I know the most popular guns to suppress in the USA are rim fire rifles and pistols. The suppressors for these small weapons are cheap, small and work very well for the most part. Ruger 10/22’s, and 77/22’s are popular, as well as Buckmark and Ruger pistols. Center fire pistols like the 9mm and 45ACP are also popular. The AR-15 while not an ideal platform to suppress it is seen with suppressors. Bolt action rifles or any caliber are ideal. About the only weapons that are not good to suppress are those with blowback actions, they make a loud popping noise at the ejection port when fired. Firearms using subsonic ammo are usually less noisy when equipped with silencers due to no sonic boom made by the bullet and a smaller powder charge for the silencer to contain and cool.
Take a look at http://www.subguns.com and http://www.silencertests.com for pics and info.
A class 1, 2, or 3 special occupational taxpayer, with a federal firearms license is required to import, deal, or manufacture (as a business) silencers or other NFA firearms.
It is legal to own, make, buy and sell silencers without a license in the USA. 36 states allow civilian ownership of silencers. Fewer states allow hunting with silencers. Some of those that do allow it restrict hunting to non-game animals when using suppressors
To make a silencer (not as a business), you need to apply for a tax stamp using an ATF form 1 and pay the $200 tax. To buy or sell, you need to apply for an ATF form 4 and pay the $200 tax. The ATF tax forms are NOT a license, they are only proof you have paid the tax and legally own the silencer.
Misti and H are seemingly so stupid that it surprises me that they know how to post on this forum. Paul Z should take a look at the BATFE website too.

Anymore, about any firearm you want to, but mainly pistols and sub-machine guns. The idea of a silencer only really works if you are shooting subsonic ammo, meaning the bullet travels slower than the speed of sound (about 1100 feet per second). Otherwise, the crack of the bullet will still be heard, but its kind of uni-directional. Pistols will shoot ammo that is subsonic, usually around 800-900 fps. A silencer on a pistol will muffle, but not completely silence the shot. So, pistols and submachine guns (because they shoot pistol ammo like 9mm or 45ACP) are the most common choices. Rifles can be silenced too, but if the rifle round travels at 3400 fps then the crack (sonic boom) is unavoidable. A little .22 pistol would be very common because its a small round and out of a pistol barrel would travel at less than the speed of sound. Any kind of revolver pistol would not be a good choice because of the gap between the cylinder and the frame, therefore letting un-silenced sound out. Semi-auto pistols can be silenced some, but the slide opening up will let some sound out too, therefore not being completely silenced. A closed bolt system, like a bolt action rifle, is the best design for silencing because its sealed off and pushes all the gases ( that make noise) forward and through a silencer at the end of a barrel. So there are some variables to all this, but at the end of the day, semi-auto pistols are the most common to silence, but they won't be completely silent.

First off; silencers are NOT illegal, they are restricted. Anyone (provided that their states allows silencers, which most do) with a clean record can apply for a Class III tax stamp, pay a $200 fee, and you will be able to legally buy any suppressor you want.
Now to your question. Any firearm that has a threaded barrel, which allows the silencer to be screwed on, will be compatible with a silencer of a matching caliber.
Here is an MP5SD which has a built in suppressor http://www.motionpicturearmourer.com/MP5SD.jpg
Here is a Walther PPK with a removable suppressor http://www.pyramydair.com/images/PPKSwSilencer2.jpg
In my experiences the most common weapon I have seen with a suppressor at the range would probably be a MAC-10. Likely because they are pretty inexpensive in semi-automatic versions as well as fully-automatic versions. Making them worthwhile to buy silencers for. As opposed to other fully-automatic weapons which can cost $5,000+.

A 9mm or .45 ACP semi-auto pistol or sub-machine gun.
A .22LR bolt action would be the most effective.
.45 ACP works best because the round is naturally subsonic.
MP5SD does NOT need sub-sonic ammunition and is actually not recommended for use with it.

The most lethal weapon that is silent is a bow and arrow. Preferably crossbow, but compound bow is just as effective and with a longer range

Unless you have a Federal Class III license, you had not even think about doing this with a firearm. This is extremely illegal and you can get charged with a felony without a Class III license.

What is it with the recent quest for silencers in the hunting section? Silencers are not cool. They are cumbersome, bulky, heavy and highly inefficient except in the movies and they are quite illegal.
