My cat eats dry food. He is a 7 month old kitten. I heard that if I feed him wet food that the cat will become use to it and demand it and then not eat his dry food. To me dry food is easier because its cheaper and you don't have to deal with throwing away a can. What should I do?

Hello,

I adopted a kitten and I feed him both. He eats the dry food all day and I use the canned or wet food to give him his medicine with twice a day, just not the whole can. He expects it at those times of course. He still eats the dry food. Now, my vet has told me since I have a very sick kitten not to feed him dry food, he is so hungry for it he cries and cries and begs for it. He eats the special canned, but it doesn't seem to satisfy him. I caved and gave him some anyway since he has been eating it until a week ago. He was so happy and satisfied. I figure if my kitty is on his way to heaven, he should be able to have the dry food too if he wants it. It is good for him, the Science Diet.

Anyway, I think it will vary from kitten to kitten. You can give him some every once in a while as treat and he won't get use to it, and you can buy the small cans, they do have kitten formula in Iams. I fed my kitten that until he actually won't eat it anymore. He loves what the vet gave me. I don't want to keep switching as it isn't good to suddenly switch diets. Consult your vet for the best food to give your kitten and the best advice.

yes, cats love the tast and texture of the wet food, give it to them once a week for a treat at a meal. I have 3 cats and dry food is the best, To much wet food can cause liver problems, just like in dogs, The only cats that are allowed to eat all wet are usally cats that are sick or are very old .

My cats don't like wet food very much. It depends on the cat really. My cats will lick up all the juice and then leave the food and come beg me for the dry stuff. Just try to give him a little bit and see how he feels about it, if he likes it then just give him a small amount every once in a while as a treat.

I write this from experience. I have three cats. One I got as a kitten. The other two I adopted from a shelter. All only had dry food. I have given them canned food and they still eat the dried food.

At times, they prefer the dry food.

Two of my cats will "beg" for the canned food and will eat a bit of it, then they eat the dried.

My best advice is to allow your cat to have both and let the cat decide what to eat.

I have three cats and feed them one can a week of wet food and have had no problems with them not eating their dry food. I started this when I needed to give meds and found that one of them would not eat people food with the exception of tuna. LOL Now one can a week is a treat and I have no problem getting them to take meds when necessary. Besides the oil in can food help keep the skin and coat in good condition.

Stick with canned food. Dry food is crap and very bad for your cat. Except as an occasional meal.

It is not easier for them to digest, and it does NOT clean their teeth. It's loaded with carbs, grains and byproduct and meal (chicken feet, beaks, and other disgusting things that no cat would ever willing eat). Cats are carnivores which means they need to eat meat - the one thing that's missing from just about every bag of dry food. Meal is not meat. Byproduct is not meat.

Look at the ingredients on the food you buy. Wheat, corn, chicken meal, chicken byproduct.

Sure, it is better for you. But if you're not willing to do the right thing even if it's slightly inconvenient, you should rethink having this particular kind of pet.

Dry food for you kitty is the best in my personal oppinion. It's much easier for your kitty to digest and usually makes kitty's stool more solid then soft which makes it easier to clean when that time comes. However you can give kitty wet food as a treat from time to time. I myself give my cats wet food once a week. I usually get them Fancy Feast since the cans are so small and between the two of them I divide it evenly and both of them end up with maybe a little over a teaspoon of something tastey and treaty. I hope this helps :).

Feeding an animal ONLY soft food is BAD. They need the hard food to help keep there teeth clean. I give my cats soft food as a treat every once in a while. You could always mix the two, but they NEED dry cat food!

Just don't make the wet food a regular thing. Maybe once a week mix some in with his dry food, as a treat!

I mix dry and wet, I/2 can of wet and a handful of dry, that stretches the can to two days. Wrap the 1/2 can in oil, or buy one that comes with a lid. Kitties that get wet food do get spoiled to it. Why not spoil your kitty, your all that he/she has.
