Why is it that only people with severe issues go to counseling? I mean with all the stress and pressure of everyday life, I would think that anyone should be able to go to see a counselor. What are your thoughts on counseling? Should it only be for those "disturbed" or can normal people go to?

Anyone can go. It all depends on the counselor and your goals. Some people revel in their problems and find a counselor who will allow them to remain sick. Others work through a particular problem and move on.

Sometimes people wait to see a counselor until a problem has grown to the point where they must seek out help to have a normal life.

Money is a big issue too. Many people cannot afford to pay a counselor or their insurance does not cover counseling.

People may look ever so normal on the outside and in their daily lives, but the are oftentimes boiling inside over some issue that is slowly destroying them. I think one way they keep up the facade of normality is to not talk the issue over with a trusted, professional individual.

Other people have lost their friendship web or family members wh othey normally would confide to about personal matters. They suffer for a time before they too go to a counselor.

As far as a "normal" and a "person in crisis" goes: Yes, that's two types of clients, but counselors talk to both kinds.

If you can afford it, and want to see a counselor, do so.

Anyone can go. It's not just for "disturbed" people. All counseling is basically is just talking to someone about different things that are bothering you. Most people do that anyway with friends or family members. The difference is a counselor has been trained to know how to help a person whereas a friend or family member may not.

What is your definition of normal? Do we not all have problems, concerns, stress in life at one point in time. If someone feels like they need to talk to someone then yes "normal" people can go to counseling. Most people I have met who do not have severe issues can usually deal with life without paying someone to tell them to be positive. It really disturbs me that you think that people who have had problems are not normal. We all do man some need help more than others geesh

What exactly is normal? Many people who appear to be handling the stress of life today are very good at putting on a good act of coping. Everyone needs to talk to another person now and then about their problems. Many go to their ministers, friends, or family members who are helpful. Anyone who feels the need can go to a counselor whenever they need to.

Sure, normal people can go. I mean, it is your descision as to whether or not you think you should go. And just so you know, there are no normal people. Everyone has something in their life that sets them apart from other people. Go to counseling if you feel you need it. Counselers are people who help other people take some weight off of their shoulders. So if you feel you need it, go!

Why does everyone who has never been to a therapist classify the people that see them as disturbed. It doesn't mean you are disturbed; some very wealthy intelligent people see them to learn how to cope with the day to day stresses of life. I think the people that don't see a counsler are more "disturbed" then us counsler croonies. We are not the one pretending that our lives are perfect. We realize that we have issues and a person that is unbiast to the situation will give us useful advice. Don't get me wrong some people that have sever mental anquish do see therapist etc... but they are there for everyone. In todays world I hate to inform you my friend "Not one person is undisturbed" !!!

Counseling is wonderful !!!
"To thine own self be true"
"As a man thinketh so is he"
This is where you can tell the whole truth and think out loud without reservations. There is No judging, no criticizing, no condemning, only support and caring. You can uncover your motives, make sense of your life by improving your character, work on negative behaviors that bug you, and thus discover the real you underneath all those layers and years of denial.
I can't recommend it highly enough.
Group therapy is the best.
Be blessed
Peace and love

How do you think severe issue happen? People ignore them until they get to be severe!
All normal people are disturbed whether they want to admit it or not. Everyone can learn something from talking to a counsellor, especially if the counsellors are seasoned and have lots of years under their belt.
