Dear lord! That's really dangerous.

You should hold the tube close to the end you want the stopper to go. Just have like a short 1/2" stub of the tube sticking out of your hand. Twist the stopper while you gently push it onto the tube. Then move your hands back a bit when the stopper is on and repeat until the tube is through.

If you have too much tube out, it will be really easy to make it buckle and shatter causing some major lacerations.

Some lubrication as mentioned in other answers, and use a table or counter to push against, with a pair of gloves that won't allow the glass to go through, and use the stopper as the object you push against. The glass could shatter while trying to push it through. Keep the motion as straight as is possible. Lateral force on the glass could cause it to break.
