Lol! I don't think they would. This is the funniest question I have ever seen on Yahoo! Answers so far. (maybe not if someone just randomly posted "It's Peanut Butter Jelly Time!" or something funnier)

Red earthworms make good pets and are good for getting rid of garbage. They especially love onions.
I haven't kept nightcrawlers as pets, their care may be a little different.
I like to keep them in a bucket. I fill it half full of damp soil and mix in some shredded newspaper and some leftovers, but not meat because it draws flies. Keep the soil somewhat moist but not soaked. Put in more leftovers and/or paper, as needed. When you get too many worms, take some of them out, with some of the compost that now is in the bucket, and put it in the garden.
Earthworms can't hear, speak, or operate machinery; and they have a poor sense of direction, so I would not let them out of the bucket unsupervised.

If you let an earthworm "roam the house" it will very likely dry out and die (unless your house is a moist'n'filthy pit and your floor is covered with soil) so, no it won't return to its box at night.

Be senseful. Yes, they make good pets. Take a plastic shoebox, fill it with moist soil. Rip up newspapers/bread or whatever leftovers you have around the house and let them eat it. Spritz with water often. Keep in a dark place and enjoy. Don't let them roam the house though: bad idea. They're great composters and make great soil for your garden.

I highly doubt that you could train an earthworm to return to its box, or other dwelling area at the end of the night. I don't even know why one would want one as a pet... why not get something more practical and loyal... A dog... cat? perhaps a ferret?
