lol means laugh out loud or laughing out loud. That means that they either have nothing other to say, and the silence is to loud, or they thought that what you said was funny.

For the same reason people write 'y' instead of 'why' and 'betta' instead of 'better'. It's speedy, and doesn't involve exercising the brain too much. 'LOL' is a quick way of expressing amusement; otherwise everyone would just write 'hahahaha', which would be twice as annoying in my opinion.

lol doesn't mean laugh out loud anymore
lol is kinda like a period these days
example:
dood, i got a pet lol
or
dood, wth man, i freeking failed this test lol
also, lol can be used to open a sentence, kinda like a quotation mark u know?
example:
lol, look what i got
lol, that's cool
lol well, that's all really
i don't know really know how lol came into being but this is how u use them these days

lol and jk are the two most ANNYING things... i don't like to use abbreviations, sometimes i do, though...
what really annoys me is when people actually say lol or jk, instead of JUST using them in IM's and stuff...
i always say:
whatever happened to ha ha???~

lol sorry couldn't help it. i do sometimes see inappropriate use of lol and it does annoy me slightly
