2 days, 2 weeks, 2 months is two early. I would say 6 months is a good start. A year is very good. Two years means he's really ready. IN the meantime, he can make friends and be friends. I was a widow and dated 6 months later. By two years with the person, I realized he was not the right man, but someone I needed to hold me over the bump.

I think that it all depends on the person. But, from experience (not from being widowed, but life) I think that it is best to wait until you are no longer lonely to start dating. When you feel comfortable with yourself alone, then you are more whole. If there are gaps within you and you look for somebody to fill them, it can and in many cases does lead to an unhealthy relationship.
After my divorce, I waited for a long to time date, until I was happy to be single. Then my current wife came along and ruined that (so to say, I am very happy to be with her). It may sound bad, but when I was really lonely, I went to one night stands, to eliminate any emotional ties to anybody.
But in the end you do what you feel is right.

Anything before two years would be too soon. And It also depends on the person cause everyone is different the person needs time to heal it could be a long process.

When the widower feels its time is an easy answer, but if he's young with children I'd have to take their feelings into consideration and allow them their grieving time also.

Well you know back in the day, it was like 5 yrs!! WOW!!! But for me personally I think if someone special enough was able to catch my eye & stimulate conversation...maybe I would wait a year to a year & a half!

Everyone is different and we can't put a time limit on something like that. Whatever makes him/her happy.
