Here are some definitions. DVD9 is the format used in DVD movies you can find at your local BlockBuster. DVD9 disks can hold up to approximately 9GB, hence the name "DVD9." Many people like to copy DVD movies to DVD blanks, so called DVD backups. Single layered DVD blanks can record up to 4.7GB of video. They are commonly referred to as "DVD5" since they can record close to 5GB of video. Therefore, you can't fit a movie from a DVD9 disk to a DVD5 disk. People get around this problem by 1 of 2 ways. First, you can shrink a movie to fit on to a DVD5 using special video software (e.g. DVDShrink or CloneDVD2). Or, you can copy it on to a dual layered DVD (e.g. DVD+R DL) which can hold up to 8.5GB of video. However, most standalone DVD players and older DVD drives can not play dual layered DVD movies. You have to use a DVD player which can read them. Most modern - less than a year old - DVD drives can read dual layered disks. I'm guessing that you did not properly burn the movie to the DVD+R DL. You also need software which can burn movies on to a dual layered disk, such as Ashampoo Burning Studios, Nero 7 Ultra Edition or Roxio Easy Creator.

The website Afterdawn has a great collection of guides which teach you how to use various free software to edit and record movies. The site also provides more details on the differences between DVD9 and DVD5. Here is the link: http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/

this is because you need the -R disc. the +R's wont play in newer players. look in you manual to see what formats the player will play.
