SVCHOST is a short version of the term "Service Host".
Windows is built as a group of separate services that cooperate to work as a unified system called the operating system.
For example, the "Windows Installer" service might need to call the "Restart" service after it finishes installing a certain software or device driver, it cannot contact it directly (for security and stability reasons), so it asks the SVCHOST to call the "Restart" service.
Another example is when you attempt to make a video call in MSN Messenger, the messenger "Process" calls svchost to use the service of the Web Cam Driver, and the Mike Driver. It can't call them directly simply because it doesn't know the type of web cam you have, and since different web cams have different drivers, that use different resources on your system, it cannot predict even where to place the direct request (now, I'm heading into describing the mechanism of the OS, So I'm gonna stop here). there has to be an intermediate "service" that knows where every other service is located, and every other service is registered there, and has the ability to contact this very service. this service is called (in Windows) "Svchost"
Enjoy ;)
