Yes -- it's simple, but difficult. You have to compliment her on something that you genuinely care about, and that she really cares about.
For example, many women care about their clothes. So that's okay. But most quality women also recognize that their clothes change, and that sometimes they aren't as pretty, or that when they get old, their hair may fall out. So think: if it's a compliment you could give your grandmother, then you're getting somewhere. It's a recognition of their intangible qualities, real woman-hood, rather than physical. That's why saying "you make me want to be a better person" is recieved better than "you're so hot right now."
Also, you should know something about her. (This is also why you ask questions and don't just talk about yourself.) You should be able to sense why you like her, also. So think, hard. If your parents or your grandma asked you what was so great about her, what would the answer be? Probably not, "she's hot," but, "I just like being around her," or something similer. This is where the thinking enters. Why do you like being around her? What is particular ... it doesn't need to be a fact, though it can be, it could be a little thing or an intangible thing.
You may like that you can't help but smile when you see her. Or that she gets embarressed at compliments and twirls her hair. You can say these things, they aren't gay. Our society has misinformed men about masculinity. Don't be afraid to tell her what you really think. If it is sincere, she'll love almost any compliment.

Perhaps if you had a bigger vocabulary, and didn't have to resort to using "gay" as a pejorative adjective for "bad," you would get a lot more compliments.
Until then, just keep using your hateful speech and see where it gets you.
A sincere compliment would be something like, "You look nice today" or "You always look so happy when I see you, it always makes me feel better." Many guys would prefer to come up with a "line" - I guess they don't realize that simpler (and more honest) is better.

Yeah, anything's a sincere compliment when it comes from the heart no matter how cheezy, or "gay" or however it may sound. If my guy never took notice of my shoes or clothes in general and then one day I go out and buy this extremely fabulous pair that I absolutely love and they were totally expensive, and then that night he mentions how great they look...then yeah, that would probably be music to my ears. I like when guys take notice of small, simple things that I do. It's a compliment in itself when he just pays attention to the details, no matter how superficial they may seem.

As long as the guy is sincere she should be able to pick up on that.
Some women are insecure, or very guarded... (and many men have ulterior motives behind the compliment) but thats beside the point. If a man wants to make a compliment, he should.

I say "Wow you look really nice today" or "as usual" and walk away. I like women who wear nice shoes. I might say "You look really good in those shoes" or "I love you in that dress". I think that is non-gay platonic or perhaps borderline attraction. don't you think a little harmless flirting of this type is fun.....I do.

He should find something that's different about her recently and compliment it. Like if she's wearing her hair differently, say 'your hair looks good like that'. But it should be rather nonchalant, and sound like an afterthought.

Instead of saying "I love your shoes!" say "Damn your feet are sexy!" Not gay at all and most women love compliments of this sort.
