As the other person stated, each iron goes a different distance. 3 iron goes farther than a 9 iron. usually, there is a 10-15 yard difference in distance between each club. This allows for a person to hit a different club for a different distance shot and still take a full swing. This is more consistant than using on club and changing how hard you swing on each shot.

The thing to do is find out how far you hit each iron with a full swing. You can do this by going to the driving range and hitting 5 to 10 shots with each iron. Be sure to judge how far you hit each shot and take an average. Then when you get on the course and you have 150 yards to the middle of the green, you will know that you hit your 7 iron (for ex.) 150 yards and that would be the club for that shot. Assuming there is no wind or elevation change.

first all golf clubs have loft, even the putter... an iron set generally has a difference of 3 to 5 degrees of loft per club, but uniformly per set (eg; pitching wedge 45%, 9 iron 41, 8 iron 37 and so on) the higher the number the more the loft the club face has at address, so the 9 will hit it high whereas the 3 iron will hit it farther because it will tend to hit it lower with its flatter face) there is no set loft=distance so you will have to test yourself with all the different clubs to see what distances you hit what clubs comfortably...it is common for better players to hit all their clubs different distances with different shape shots...for instance I practice hitting a flag at 100 yards with 3 different clubs depending on what I want the ball to do entering the green...you can also practice changing swing speeds to change shot characteristics but no professional will suggest you do that because its a tactic for advanced players and can easily cause mistakes ...dont overemphasize what distances you should hit with which club, but rather find where you hit what club comfortably with your swing...remember shorter and straight will always be much better than long and in a hazard or behind trees...get some instruction if you can afford it, good luck , have fun and putt well!

Irons are numbered consecutively however the numbers have not the different which ability. Irons are used for distances from 230 yds in to the eco-friendly. The smaller the quantity the extra advantageous the gap and the decrease the trajectory. frequently they are numbered from one million Iron by means of 9 Iron with PW = Pitching Wedge, SW = Sand Wedge, and others observed as lob wedges.

Starting with the driver, each club can be hit a certain distance. You need to go to the range a hit each club so that you will know how far you average on each shot with each different club. Then, when you get to the Real Golf Course, you will know what club to hit depending on how far it is to the hole. etc etc. Example. if you have been averaging 160 yard with your 6 iron and it's 155 to a par 3 hole, you would use that 6 iron.

The higher the number of a club, both in irons and woods, the greater the shift away from a vertical face. Generally speaking, high number clubs give the ball lift, low number clubs give it distance. Putters have vertical faces because no lift is required when the ball is on a green.

Personal experience soon teaches us the best club for a particular application.

Each iron has a different angle allowing for varied distances. A lower numbered iron will be more perpendicular with the ground, which will allow for a longer hit. Irons vary in distances, usually around 180-100 yards.

Each number represents a a particular degree of loft. As everyone has a unique swing, you will need to work out the specific distances that each number epresents for you. Wedges are increasingly being offered with numerical designations. Make sure that the clubs you are using are in good shape as the loft and lie angles can be significantly altered with use. Good luck.
