i am a Permaculture Consultant for the department of Ecology for the regional government in Guerrero Mexico
http://spaces.msn.com/byderule
Semenap has lots of projects going to rescue catchment areas ,and to conserve the soil
the World bank pays for reforestation .mainly of Pawlonia ,trees especially suited to capture carbon
and profeppa as well encourages eco projects .
But that is all very well but the public in general is not in the slightest interested about the Environment
they are going the other way ,from the bush to the cities
and they are looking ahead of them .
In My town the department of Ecology is down to a director a, secretary and two workers ,and myself a consultant
my job oficially is to consult about Environmental issues ,
cleaning the rivers ,and lagoons ,soil preservation ,reforrestation etc ,but there are no recourses for any of that ,
the river is full of rubbish ,all is on the way to the lagoons ,in the last 5 years 5 mayor species of fish have become extinct ,the river is brown full of mud impregnated with agrochemicals that is washed from the deforrested hillsides.
we try to get people interested in eco tourism ,but the farmers say that foreigners bring diseases and the devil and better stay away.
after 7 years of meetings and actions ,we have not progressed on inch.
we have cleaned p`laces with the schools ,but as we were cleaning adults came and continued to dump rubbish
the authorities are scared of the public to have a hard hand and to follow up with fines and such
5 minutes ago i heard that the former President of this town has been killed as well as his wife and maid
this is the wild west
politics is just that politics.noboddy want to upset the applecart
so the cochinaras continue
i have given many talks of these people being pigs in paradise ,and the reason they havent killed me is because everybody is friendly with me and i am a foreigner who they dont take seriously ,they laughingly call me the antichrist
there are many consiencious people in Mexico ,who love nature ,but they are in the thousands ,many millions dont give one hoot including many government departments
Semernap and Profeppa are two of the good institutions ,but with out co.operation of the public or law enforcement of the local governments to back them up .their hands are tied
Corruption flourishes and nightly convoys with illegal timber leaves the mountains .we intercept some .but it is a joke compared to the bulk of the destruction
