A recruiter came to my high school today, and he and I talked about being in the reserve while I'm attending college. He gave me a bunch of sheets and information and I'm very seriously considering it. It said that there is an Enlistment Bonus of 20,000. My question is...what exactly is that, and what are the requirements that I'd have to fullfill. Thanks.

you would have to fulfill your half of the contract, which most likely includes completing Boot Camp and A school as well as committing to x number of years.

you would get half of the boinus after completeing A school, and the other half would be broken up in to yearly payments spread out over your first enlistment.

Expect 28% taken off the top for taxes.

you will not get a check for $20K all at once up front.

If you fail to complete your half of the bargain, you could be required to repay part of thebonus that has already been paid out.

I've talked to the Navy recruiter a lot the past few months and to the best of my knowledge there are different amounts of bonuses given out depending on how in demand your rating is. I think the 20,000 bonus he told you about is given to you for going to drill at the same base for the duration of your enlistment (it sounds weird, I know, but that's what he told me). One thing you absolutely have to do is make sure everything they promise you is in writing. If it's not in writing there is really no way to get what you are promised. Go to this link and it has all the information you are probably looking for.
