I had all of my wisdom teeth extracted and the bottom ones are taking longer to heal. I've been on liquid diet for few days now and everyone says I can pretty much start eating solids (soft). But I still feel some soreness around the socket and I take advil for it. Is this normal? Then I hear about dry sockets which scares me even more. I'm so paranoid to eat anything because then it will get stuck in the socket! am I being super paranoid? :(

A little soreness is normal, you should continue eating soft foods for a few more days and then slowly incorporate your regular diet into that. Just avoid hard crunchy foods like potato chips, tortilla chips, pop corn anything that could jab the socket area causing undue trauma.

A dry socket is when the clot breaks away from the extraction site leaving the bone uncovered where the elements and bacteria of the mouth can reach it, causing excruciating pain. If you had one, you would know it. Some say it's worse than child birth.

You should start (if you haven't already) exercising your jaw by stretching your mouth open several times a day, and wider each time. This will help reduce the soreness in your muscles just from being open so wide for the extractions, and helps get the full function of your mouth back.

So continue with the Advil for a few more days, also the warm salt water rinses, and the exercises. You will be amazed at the relief the exercise give you. Sounds like your doing pretty good, just a little cautious and there is nothing wrong with that. Hope I've been of some help and good luck with the exercising, it really does help tremendously!

Been there !! I feel your pain. First you might want to try Motrin instead of Advil for the swelling it's also better for tooth pain. Also you can start to eat soft foods at your own pace. But if your that nervous chew at the front of your mouth, and always rinse with warm salt water after every meal. Your mouth has already built clots in the sockets. Dry sockets happens when the clots come out which takes allot to do. Don't starve yourself. But do things that make you comfortable as well. Good luck and happy eating......

There is nothing seems to be wrong with the procedure done ....it was a surgical extraction of your wisdom tooth. I hope the wound has been healed and you dont have a dry socket .It may take couple of days to be normal as before try like warm galss of water by adding table spoon of salt and rinse every 2 hours which will avoid any forth coming infection in the wound .....dont worry you will be alright in few days !

I understand how you feel. It took a while for me to get back to solids after I had all 4 wisdom teeth out to. And the idea of dry socket scared me to. I just remembered to rinse thoroughly and it was fine. You will be fine too. If you are really really worried, called the dentist.

Soreness is normal. It is possible that the bottom ones were impacted and the top ones weren't. Extreme pain is not normal. So if it is more than a little sore seek medical attention. If it is just uncomfortable, it is okay to eat solid foods. Just don't eat anything super hard yet like chips or pretzels.

It won't hurt you to wait a bit longer if you are nervous. Just make sure you are getting all the nutrients you need.

Why don't you start with soft things like mashed potatoes and so forth if you have not already?
