I wish I knew. But every time I mention, in the course of conversation, that I'm an atheist (and yes, such things can happen organically within a conversation), I'm met with a sigh or some indication that I'm only saying that to be provocative. While I do relish having a skewed view of things, I'm not an atheist just to be provocative: this belief has developed naturally over the course of many years and after much introspection.
Thus, as with anybody who has an opposing viewpoint, I'd guess that those who are particularly religious feel that atheists are, by admitting that belief, projecting a sense of superiority ("I'm smarter than you because I don't believe in God.") Yet, that said, I'll point out that the opposite is also true: I've been essentially pitied for not believing in God. (I was once called flat-out stupid.)
The fact is, this is true of any belief: it's not the belief that's the problem, it's the person who espouses it. Some people tend toward generalization (in all honesty, your question betrays a little of that), but generalization is a two-way street. For some, religion=evil. For others, atheism=evil. Personally, I think such generalizations do more harm than good, and only reinforce ignorance and bias.
In short, just as I don't hate all religious people, I'd don't imagine that all religious people hate me, either.

It goes both ways, really. And war between the two breaks out soon enough, especially when organised atheists start taking offence to every religious symbol (like a crucifi or a nativity scene). Maybe Americans could stand to learn a thing or two from Aussies about giving others a "Fair go".

They don't. They respect their belief and nothing else.
Actually, I have read your question wrong. You said 'some' religious people. Okay, some despise others because they are less intelligent.

They don't have a relationship with My Lord and God Jesus. When you have a relationship with God you will have His Spirit and His Love will pour out of you. Religion is not the same thing as relationship! When you love someone, you will bend over backwards to please the other person. When we want to please God, we will ask Him to forgive our sins and be Baptized in the Name of Jesus so that He can forgive our sins, NEVER to remember them, ever! (Acts 2:38)He will then give usthe Gift of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in an unknown language! When we do that, God and all of the angels are having a party in your honor. And that Pleases God very, very much. Yousay youdon't know about that umknown language part, kind of hard to swallow? Let me help. Mark 16:17, Acts 2:4, Acts 10:45-46, Acts 19:6.
check it out! The gift of salvation is waiting just for you!

Religion is something that makes people feel better about their ignorance but they do not want to be told this truth. Their lack of control of the environment,
and the knowledge of their own impending deaths makes their lives feel hopeless. Because the making of the world is complex and confusing to people

That is why I do not like even a religion. We all are people. God gave us free will, and we need to accept other people's choices. We need to have mercy and grace onto others if we expect to get mercy and grace.
We need more spiritual fruits than religious nuts! : )

I love them.
Many of them have an incredible sense of humor.
Many of them use that to mock the one I believe is the savior of mankind.
And that's both disrespectful and unnessecary.
I don't hate anyone, but some get me more frustrated than others. I can usually manage to keep my cool.
Besides, most of them are out there just to see how we will react.

i don't think think that it is fair to say that religious people are enraged with atheists nor is it fair to say that atheists think that religious people are naive and small minded. there just labels for people. it is no specific faction that has any "beef"with the other but the single people themselves that jive groups their reps.

Atheists don't have a strong point of reference for living. At least believers hope that in the afterlife they will meet their creator. So, what do Atheists believe? That they will disappear once and forever? That can be a serious matter for debate between believers and non believers.
