nothing on the desktop no icons no menu bar only wall paper

Try launching Task Manager () and click the "New Tasks..." button toward the bottom of the "Applications" tab. In that, enter "explorer" and you should get your desktop back.

If that doesn't help, try the power button (which should initiate a shutdown of the system). NOTE: Don't use the reset button which will immediately reset the system and leave the filesystem potentially with fragmentation. If the reboot doesn't restore it, you might be looking at a reinstallation of the OS.

try starting in safe mode. when system boot press F8 during the first of the booting. if you get the same result, then you'll need to do a reinstall but prick the repair option when it comes up. this will be your only thing you can do. when you do a repair, you'll lose none of your program that you have installed. it only reinstalls the windows components..
