I would say - personally - it is similar to asking a boy or girl to be your boyfriend or girlfriend. You are the SPECIAL person in their life, and the same for them! It is sweet.

It's asking that person to be your sweetheart, as an excuse because of it being Valentine's Day, you can ask them out.
It's basically asking this guy of he'll be your boyfriend, and you be his girlfriend.
