Without Light, there is no Shadow. Without Sadness, no Joy. Despair is no fun, of course, but it does make Elation that much better.

What a great Q, very rare these days...
I believe that despair and frustration are a result of our own sin as well as the world attacking us. I believe that through adversity our character is tested and gains experience. God also has a habit of making our problems work out for the best if we are willing to listen to him.

theist...viewed as a lack of faith, so i suppose from your choices it would be considered a defect although personnal i would just consider it a fact of human condition.
