Well I didn't exactly tell them to bathe. I gave them a gift basket full of soap and shampoos. It worked though.

Yes. I worked in Human Relations and on several occasions had to tell someone to bathe.

The best way is to just be honest and direct, but tactful. I've said things like, "Your boss thinks you're a good worker, but your coworkers are complaining about your hygiene. Please take a bath or a shower everyday before you come to work."

Or take the coward's way out and send them a note or an email.

Fortunately, most people get so embarrassed that you only have to tell them once.

Sad thing is I work in adoptions and I not only have to tell people who are applying to adopt children mind you that they not only need to bathe, but could they please clean their house and deal with their pet roaches and rats! I have had to point out to adults that they need to bathe regularly and also bathe their children regularly and to remove the roaches from their babies diapers. I am so not kidding about this! Just so you know they don't get to adopt if you are wondering!

that can be real shameful to say something because where I live, people's water pipes have froze, or they have been without power for a couple of days, and some of the people are getting kind of ripe, but it is not their fault. So no, I would not say anything to someone, you do not know their circumstances.
