No dog is 100% non-allergenic. But if your dad is only mildly allergic, then the Bichon Frise would be a good choice. However, these little dogs require a LOT of grooming.

This is a list of dogs which are supposed to be hypo allergenic:

Airedale Terrier
Basenji
Bedlington Terrier
Bichon Frise
Border Terrier
Cairn Terrier
Chinese Crested (hairless)
Havanese
Hungarian Puli
Kerry Blue Terrier
Maltese
Miniature Schnauzer
Portuguese Water Dog
Shih-Tzu
Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier
Spanish Water Dog
Standard Poodle
Standard Schnauzer
Tibetan Terrier
Toy Poodle
West Highland White Terrier
Wirehaired Fox Terrier
Yorkshire Terrier
If you decide on a breed get your Dad to spend quite a few hours with the breed to make sure he doesn't have a reaction to it. Different people have different reactions to different breeds.
Please note that "Labradoodles" are NOT on this list because they are not a breed but a crossbreed and cannot be guaranteed not to produce a reaction.

There are a number of different breeds which are non allergic, they are in a group of dogs that hair grows continually.
Funnily enough i had the exact same problem (my dad is allergic), i have 2 shih-tzu which are like gorgeous little teddy bears that have come to life, my dad is not allergic to them. Other dogs in the group are poodles, Yorkshire terriers, bischon friese. The only real downside is that all this dogs need regular grooming.
Before getting our dogs we visited the breeder with my dad for a hour or so to see if there was any reaction, this is a good idea.
Please e-mail me if you want any more info

There is no dog that is 100% allergy free. It's not the dog hair that's the problem, its the dander from their skin that causes allergies. Poodles, shih tsus and other purebred dogs that don't shed are less likely to cause allergies but even then, it is not 100% foolproof. Labradoodles and other poodle crosses are riskier - they may or may not shed - because they are mixed breeds and there is a lot of variability in the puppies as to whether or not they shed, regardless of what any breeder tells you. They are definitely not 100% allergy free.

Your best bet is for your Dad to get desensitization shots, if he is willing and then get a purebred like a poodle that does not shed. And the dog should never sleep on your dad's bed. He can check with his doctor if he is willing about whether this is a good approach for him. If not, you'll have to wait until you don't live with your dad.

I'm not saying all this to bum you out, but I'd hate for you to get a puppy and then have to give it away because your dad's allergies became a problem.

Labradoodles are a mixed breed and, although people are breeding and selling these backyard breeder dogs and paying high prices for them, they are only a mixed breed. Because they are backyard breeder dogs, stay away from them for now.
Try a Hairless Chinese Crested or Powder Puff Crested. There are many hairless dogs out there, just search on Hairless dogs. The allergies themselves are usually due to dander and not the hair. So check with your dad to make sure it is the hair he is allergic to and not the dander.
Another dog is the Bichon Frise. they are similar to mini poodles and have great personalities. although they can be a bit barky sometimes, as most little dogs can.

Poodles or Labradoodles or most poodle crosses are OK as they usually do not shed and it is shed hair that causes the allergy.

There are hairless breeds like the Chinese crested or the Mexican hairless but they are toy dogs and their appearance puts some people off though they mostly have nice natures.

However a hairless dog or a poodle or labradoodle will be expensive as these breeds are seen as designer dogs.

Try a poodle or a Labradoodle. See if your dad is allergic to every kind of dog. There are some people who are allergic to some breeds of cats and not others.

Personally I wouldn't get a dog if that is the case, if you end up having to re-home him then it will break the pups heart,, not worth the risk.
