How about a round trip airline ticket and a valid US Passport.
Wait...as a you are only a Legal Resident you can't get a US Passport. Maybe your residency card will work along with a second photo ID.
You can probably find out by going to the following website and check under the State Department, INS and other sites related to your situation.

You answered your own question. You need to have your passport to go to a foreing country and then get back into the US. If you are here on a visa, you need to check with immigration before you leave or you may not be allowed back.
