My thyroid keeps swelling up and getting rock hard. I had blood test done and my endocrinologist said that everything was fine. I dont believe that because a few years ago my husband went through the same thing and had to get his removed. They even did a scan and said it was normal. Yet my regular family doctor was feeling my neck and told me that on that day it was in fact swollen and hard to go back and tell them to do more test. But my endo just keeps saying that it is fine...HELP? It is starting to affect my breathing and eating when it does this.

First thing I'd do is get a copy of all labwork that was done. Perhaps you are high in range and that's why the doctor keeps saying you are fine. The big problem is the range changed for TSH in 2003 to 0.3 to 3.0, but most labs still have it as 0.3 to 5.5. This could stop a diagnosis say if you had a TSH of 4.0 or even 5.0. Also, TSH changes throughout the day, so its best to get it tested it at highest point which would be first thing in the morning.

Next time you test, get it done early in the morning and ask for a TSH, Free T4, Free T3, and an antibody test. Get copies of these results to compare with older labs. If necessary ask to see an endocrinologist.

Learn as much as possible. For some reason, those o us with thyroid problems have to push for the proper care.

Get a second opinion-and maybe a third. Have your doctor refer you to another endocrinologist-some are better than others. Does your doctor know its affecting you breathing and eating? If not, you need to tell your doctor. If he does not help you find another doctor just for a second opinion. If you have good insurance-call and speak to a representative-they may be able to refer you to another DR. or endo-that will be covered within your plan.

You can't go on like that. Get a second opinion from another endocrinologist. Remember, you pay the doctor. He works for you!

If it's swelling up and going down all of the time, it's highly unlikely that it is your thyroid that is swelling up. Especially if your thyroid hormone levels are normal. It is probably lymph nodes. Or your throat in general swelling due to an allergic reaction.
