Cats have scent glands in their cheeks and will mark almost anything from the edges of cabinet, door frames, you, the book you are reading etc.

Other than feeling good... this is also a way that cats leave scent markings and they like to mark their territory as their own. I've owned several cats over the years and they all do it. Usually a box is something that has not been in the house for a long time and has a different scent associated with it. Your kitty is just making it a part of his/her space. Usually males do it more, or at least that's what I've noticed with my cats.

Most cats love the texture and warmth of cardboard boxes: they like to play with them; sit in them; hide in them, sleep in them and of course, rub against them. The rubbing (of cat's face and body) against an object is associated with a cat's marking behavior - i.e., the cat is claiming the object as his own by transfering his scent on it by rubbing. The purring or hind feet kneading as the cat marks object is associatted with the cat's pleasure in claiming an object as his own.

Cat's bodies are covered with nerves and rubbing against things creates a pleasant sensory experience. Petting them does too.

my cat does the same thing, then she gets into the box and takes a nap, or just sits there and watches the world from whatever box she has found to get into...it doesn't pay to leave a box unattended or undiscarded around here, the cat will adopt it.

If your cat is using his face, then he is marking it with hes sent. He most likely does this to any thing and everything. My cats target my shoes. Every night when I return from work.

he is rubbing his scent on the box so it means other cats will know he was there.
