What in the world is a dollar dance?

I first saw it listed under reception activties on a list my DJ had me fill out with things we'd like to have music for, such as cutting the cake. I figured if I didn't know it I didn't want to do it & just moved on. Now I see mention of it from time to time here. I've never heard it or seen it. I've looked it up but only really find music to do it to. Can someone clue me in on this practice?

Just wanted to add, I have no interest in doing it at all, it sounds like something I wouldn't do anyway, I'm just curious. :)

It's tacky and cheap. It's where the bride and groom dance with as many guests who pay them per dance. Don't do it.

Dollar dances are traditionaly done with the hispanic culture it is not tacky and its not anything bad. It is a way the guest like to give something to them couple to use on their honeymoon. Its just like others that have a money tree. People that say it is tacky are really rude and need to learn more things about cultures and why they do it. I think that if you have a tradition in your family to do it then do so. But if you are not use to it then do not do it. My family always does the dollar dance and i will let you know that everyone there that dances with the bride and not just the bride. The women dance with the groom the men with the bride. They all look forward to this part of the wedding dance. And have you mind that i have anunts and uncles that give Not only $1.00 but they give you $100 its because they love you and want something special for you.

It's a dance where your guests get to dance with you after they pay. Both you and your new husband will dance with the guests and usually the attendants take the money and put them in a bag or purse for you to get later. They also let each guest know when it's time to cut in. This was a fun break during my wedding night and a great way to chit-chat with some of the men from the other side of the family I may not have otherwise. (It can also bring a lot of cash). Our DJ suggested calling it the Honeymoon dance, a New Home Dance Fund, or something else creative.

Agreed Nancy.

I am Caucasian, but my step cousin married into a Hispanic family. This was the first time I ever saw this type of tradition.

It worked out great. You never believe how a person who has no clue how to speak Spanish, can learn how to communicate to his family by doing this dance. It is a great way to get to know family, one on one time of meeting/thanking the family members.

The to really get comical, my step brother gave a dollar to the groom. Everyone cracked up and it was just a blast.

It is not "white trash". (Didn't originate from Caucasians..." and it is not tacky. Instead of gifts (which no such thing as have to get gifts), people opt for the wedding dance for their honeymoon options or living expense options.

Money as a gift in a bag v.s giving the money while getting one on one attention? I personally think the bride/groom who choses to give/gain the attention is thinking clearly when it comes to getting to know family and friends on both sides.

Either way it is the same thing whether the money bought the bride/groom a gift, money gave in a bag or money given in person. Same meaning, just given differently.

A dollar dance is where your DJ plays a song or series of songs while you and your husband dance with other people. typically family and friends hand money to your maid of honor (for you) or the best man (for the groom) and get to dance with you for a certain amount of time. My sister used a minute and a half and then they switched people. People can pay a dollar or five or however much they want to. The dollar dance is a very common dance.

In times past a Dollar Dance was where a person would pay $1.00 for a dance - usually a pretty young lady or a handsome guy.

The money was donated to a designated Charity on behalf of the organization holding the Dance.

A dollar dance is where every guest that wants to, pays $1.00 to have a (usually) 1 minute dance with the bride or groom. All money made goes to the couple.

Its an old Lithuanian tradition.
People "pay" money (supposed to be a dollar, but now a days people give BUCKS for it) to dance with the bride AND the groom.(true tradition calls for both) Sometimes the couple wear special plastic vests that hold money or sometimes the money is shoved in the couples clothing (gag) or the MOH or Best Man stand with a basket and collect the money.

thats about it in a nutshell.

Basiclly what it is is the dj will play music and I guess everytime the music stops one of the men from the wedding will give you a dollar to dance with you so each time you keep changing partners and you make some money. I think it is tacky some people think it is fun.

The bride and groom each dance with people who pin money to their clothes. Bridal attendants hand out pins, and the bride and groom end up with tons of bills everywhere, normally singles. People stand in line to dance with you, pretty much, and it's not uncommon for people of the same gender or under the age of 10 to dance with you and pin money to you (ouch if they're under 10, in my opinion, have someone help with the pinning part).

I don't know where it originates from.

I believe it has to do with weddings. The people at the reception both male/female pay the bride/groom $1.00 to dance with them.It was a way for the married couple to get extra money for whatever they wanted.
