Its a proven fact that more than half the dogs in shelters labeled as pit bulls don't have any in them.
Also, everyone keeps saying not to have them if you have children... That is a crock of crap. They are one of the best breeds with children. People saying otherwise are ignorant fools who believe the news they hear/read. My nieces, 3 & 8, spend a lot of time with me and my dogs and I have never, in 15 years, had even one show any kind of aggression towards the kids, myself or anyone else. The owners are to blame when a child gets bitten. Most of the time it is because they left the child alone with the dog, something that should never be done, with any breed.
Something else people seem to forget.... "pit bull" is a general term used for SEVERAL different breeds. If we bunched all breeds this way, we would see hunting dogs, herding dogs, etc, higher on the list than pit bulls.
For the original question: It depends on what type of pit bull you want. American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Terrier, Bull Terrier, American Bulldog, Cane Corso, American Pit Bull Terrier, etc (yes, all of those breeds plus several more and anything that even resembles a pit bull is considered a pit bull).
After you decide what breed, it comes down to bloodlines.
You can find APBTs for anywhere from $100-$500. But, they are most likely either BYB dogs or very poorly bred dogs. Good APBTs can sell anywhere from $2000 to $20000 depending on the bloodlines. You can find some decent lines for $800-$1000. Going under $800 will most likely mean the "breeder" is just breeding them because they have two pit bulls to throw together or they don't know the lineage of the dog and they arent/cant be registered.
Good luck! Once you get a pit bull you will never want to own another type of breed. They truely steal hearts.

Animal shelters are usually over run with pit bulls, and they often times get pit bull puppies. That is if the shelters adopts out pit bulls. An adoption fee is usually between $100-$200. You can search on http://www.petfinder.com/ for pit bull puppies who are in animal shelters in your area, and see if you can find one you like. Otherwise you can look for a breeder. I am not sure how to do this. In our local paper there are ALWAYS pit bull puppy adds. But I don't know if they are GOOD breeders or bad breeders. I live in a bad area where most people fight their pit bulls. They sell the puppies for $50. This is not the kind of breeder you want to get your puppy from. From a good breeder a puppy should cost at least a few hundred dollars. I hope this helps. Good Luck finding your new pit bull puppy. I plan to get one when i get a house. They are such sweet and loving animals!!!

I paid $100.00 six years ago for mine. He was two weeks old. I have raised him ever since. And never let him out of my sight. He is very beautiful, everyone that sees him wants him.
