If you can wait until the nice weather, yard sales are great - you can pick up just about anything at them - hopefully you have vehicle to bring large items home
Also, sometimes in the classified section of newspaper they have some good deals
Try the Salvation Army and Rebuilt Resources - places where people donate their used items - I have purchased some great items there, cheap
Dont forget, you can paint the furniture a colour that suits you
Personally, even with used items, I like to actually go to the stores rather than choose on a web site - so I can check the items out, turn them upside down, etc. etc.
Also, you could put an ad in your local newspaper, listing the items you are looking for
Good luck - sounds like a fun project

Hey! I am not sure where you are located in the country but I think the following stores are all over. You can find some terrific buys at www.homegoods.com . They carry overstock of everything from furniture to bath towels! Great store! Also check out www.roomstore.com . They carry nothing but furniture but at great discounted prices compared to higher end furniture stores. Good luck!

go binning in back alleys, I'm serious. watch a video called grifters. A man in Paris has not bought groceries for ten years and eats five star meals of unopened food, caviar, artichoke hearts, smoked salmon. of course I would not go binning myself but u would be amazed at what's out there second hand, I own a harp bought at a garage sale for $70, a friend has offered to buy it off me for $1000. I find hospital thrift shops have the best quality items, avoid value village, they will sell any old dirty junk

Target has pretty decent put=together-yourself furniture that's not too expensive.....otherwise, I love buying furniture from resale and consignment stores!
