I want something that my wife would be able to handle in a pinch, and also one that would be easy to secure from my young kids without making it too inaccessable.

Great advice - hand't considered the shotgun but it sounds interesting!

My wife is comfortable with a glock 9mm at the range, but I worry that it wouldn't be a good choice for a stress situation. I also worry that a .22 might not have the stopping power to get the job done.

GREAT ANSWERS!

All right... enough of these answers.

First of all the best for home protection is a revolver, even for an experienced user. Automatics can jam, require more maintenance and all in all are tricker to use effectively.

Secondly there is no way to effectivly secure a weapon and have it available for quick use with kids about. Trigger locks, a safe or whatever. Kids snoop no matter what. Plus one can shoot at the range endlessly and even with a readily available weapon..... waking up in the dead of night and be able to make the decision to shoot and effectively is a whole different ball game.

Yes I keep a wepon handy. Its a small safe that requires not only a code but you have to press the buttons (like a piano) in a certain order..... tough for small hands and even for most adults if not practiced and intimately familer with doing it. The kids are scattered around in various rooms as well..... how do you handle that?

All in all a gun is not the answer. Most can not use a weapon in times of stress unless trained. And odds are once using a weapon is appropriate it is too late anyway. By all means have a weapon in the house but invest in a serious gun safe.

But at the same time consider other things as well. Securing windows, upgrading door locks (most doors just require a good kick to enter), planting thorny bushes around low windows, lights, an alarm system, etc. Giving time to go to the safe and get a weapon.

All in all guns give a false sense of security and are not the be all end all. Just a thought. And yes, a shotgun is the most effective weapon for close quarters defense. If you just point it in the right direction you will hit something.

Get a short-barreled marine shotgun. Low maintenance, durable, easy to swing, and in the right gauge, not something that will punch holes in the walls (and hit other people). Just the sound of a shotgun shell being chambered will send most people running, and it doubles as a club. Even an inexperienced person (i.e. - dangerous person) should be able to hit someone inside a house with a shotgun.

Try the Mossberg 500 Persuader with an 18.5" barrel in a .410 bore or 20 gauge model. These will be lighter models with less recoil than a 12 gauge, but still effective at close range. It's also easier to find in the dark than a handgun. Take it out on the range and have fun.

* 6, 8 and 9 shot capacity with 2-3/4" shells
* Blued, matte or Marinecote™ finishes
* Rugged synthetic stock and forearm
* Ambidextrous, thumb-operated safety
* Proven Mil-Spec & NIJ performance
* Pistol grip models available
* Includes a free gun lock

All the above are good answers. My advice? Try several of the guns, then go with the one that SHE likes best. She will be more likely to use it if she feels confident in her ability. And let her shoot as much as she wants to.
The 9mm is a great home defense round, and a tactical-style shotgun works good, too. Unless she is a real Annie Oakley, I'd agree with the person who recommended a smaller guage. There is a balance that you must find when it comes to securing the weapon from the children. There are several secure lock boxes available that do not require keys to open. I would also recommend a gun safety program for the whole family. The Eddie Eagle Program is a great one for children.
Good luck!

I highly recommend the 357 Magnum because you can shoot 38's in it also!!!! I would go with a revolver in this case!!! An automatic may fail you when you need it the most!!! A revolver will never leave you down!!!! As far as a shotgun goes, I would go with 12gauge pump action!!! Use double 00 buck shot is the best!!! I have both handgun and shotgun for home defense!!!! Like the boy scout motto {BE PREPARED} Best wishes and Happy Trails

I'm very glad, the way you stated your question:

>What would be a good *first* handgun...<

This implys that you will be purchasing more in the future, thats great man! Can never have enough firearms.

A .22 is a great weapon to start with. Then you can work up to a 9mm and .45

One of the best ways to find out is to go to a range. A lot of gun stores/ranges allow customers to rent handguns for the range. Find something that she can handle easily and is comfortable with. A .22, .38 or .380 are good small handguns.

I would recommend a 410 shotgun, they make short ones called snake charmers that would be perfect--- you can buy a safe gun lock most sporting shops, ask a cop they sometimes give them away as a part of gun safety....... a 20 gauge shotgun is great if Ur wanting something with more bite

If you have a child in the house you most likely have laws about making your gun safe to prevent any accident from happening. If that is the case by the time you get the gun ready to fire you most likely would be dead. I was a police officer and when my children were young I never took the guns into the house. Take a self defense course.

I realize you are looking for a handgun. The recommended number one home defense weapon is a shotgun. Why because under stressful situations aim is key. It is much more unlikely that one would miss with a shotgun. There are loads light enough that it would be easy for your wife to use. Check with a local gun dealer and they can explain this for you.

There is no way to properly secure a handgun from kids and still have it readily accessible "in a pinch". The danger of your kids finding and handling it are higher than the remote chance of danger from an intruder.
