My cousin called me and told me she only got $180 this year for her son. That blew me away because I thought it was supposed to be $1,000 per child.

The child tax credit is the same for this year as it was for last year ($1,000 per child). To take the child tax credit you have to have taxable income remaining after deductions. What your cousin may be referring to is the additional child tax credit that can be taken if you have 3 or more qualifying dependents.

It's $1000, but you have to have paid at least $1000 in taxes to get it back. The Earned Income Credit can be gotten for amounts over what you actually paid in taxes, but it is broken into percentages based on income.

Federal is the same this year as last year but will probably be cut for next year. State by state differs.
