No, there are all sorts of compatibility issues. Things might work out perfectly, or you might lose some (TTL/ iTTL) functionality, or in the worst case you could even fry your camera.
Check your manual for supported flash guns, or search for specific combinations on the net. Here's a Sony user's forum for starters: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/forum.asp?forum=1009

NO!!!!! As a matter of fact, the old single contact shoes like a Vivitar 285 (still in common use among pros) can actually damage the circuitry of modern multi-contact cameras. Also, some cameras use proprietary shoes that won't even fit on another camera.

Get a flash made for your Sony. If you don't want to buy a Sony flash, Vivitar, Sunpak, and Metz are all good third-party manufacturers that make flashes for specific camera brands.

I know it costs more, but if the option is frying your camera, obviously, it's worth spending more.

nope...some cameras won't trigger the flash. For example Sony's digital Alpha-100 will only work with their own propritory flashes, unless you buy an expensive adapter.

But for you camera model (see the link below) i'm pretty sure that as long as you get a "non-dedicated" flash it will work.

Another danger is that some older model flash may have too high of a trigger voltage, which over time could damage the cameras hotshoe circuitry.

i'm not certain about the Panasonic stuff, yet i do not imagine you are able to change out flashes on maximum DSLR's. countless the agencies presently use "proprietary" flashes, that are designed in certain for his or her cameras, and also you'll likely damage both the digicam, the flash, or both, in case you do not use a flash in certain made for THAT digicam. The old Nikon movie cameras, (I shot with a pair Nikon FM's for 25 years) may change out flashes, yet they purely had 2 contact factors. straight forward on/off. the present crop of flashes, have numerous contacts, so the digicam and flash can "communicate" to each and each, about how mush flash, how lengthy, etc, The digicam can tell the flash the aperture settings, % settings, ISO etc, and the "in digicam" pc "makes a call" something else, reckoning on how solid the flash output "can" be. This does supply you extra consistent consequences. it is also faster, interior the authentic international. i do not ought to shop making flash adjustments, for the gentle, and shutter settings. edit a million 4 spectacular solutions up to now
