We purchased an awesome, unique 50's sofa set at an estate sale. It had been left sitting in a vacant home prior to us getting it and had a moth infestation. We fixed that but the fabric is falling apart. Slipcovers don't work because it's very uniquely shaped. We got a quote for upholstery and it was $2000. All reupholstery shops I called said they start at $1K for a couch. Help! Anybody know a good way to get some reupholstered affordably? We're the two least crafty, most inept with sewing people in the universe so DIY is probably out.

Id post a free ad in www.craigslist.org (in Wanted column) and find yourself a hobby sewer with a sewing maching right in your own locality. . Then let them start with the cushions. After that take off the side arm covers, remove those yourself taking out tacks. Restaple on the newly sewn covers yourself, its easily done.

A good sewer can literally use the old pieces of upholstery as a pattern and sew from that. Cut and sew is what you are looking for.

You can buy Uph fabric at Joans Fabric, My guess for something like this no more than $100 at most. The cut and sew might run you a bit more, but not that much more .

Uggers. That's a tough one. I would say, start saving for a reupholstery job if you really love it. But in the meantime, you could always purchase a few yards of fabric for the seat. Just wrap the cushions like you are wrapping a birthday present Tuck the fabric in tight. And pin it together underneath. You could also do this for the rest of the sofa, but if you have no DIY skills, I think it will look pretty bad. So just stick to the cushions. Find a fabric that looks good with what's on the rest of the sofa. And mix and match some throw pillows to tie it all together. Though like I said, there is nothing better than professional upholstery. Many older sofas are made far better than what they make today for the price, but I would ask a reputable upholsterer that question when the time comes. Hope this helps. Good luck.
